  • Your Personal Branding

Whenever I think of people who worked so hard on almost everything but pay so little attention to build their characters, their strange act simply startles me….what they don’t know is that “characters” are our most precious assets…they are our personal branding, like the invisible clothes we wear all time that determine how people perceive us and think of us….whenever you think of it, you know how important it is….but some people just don’t believe it, they know clearly what they want but simply don’t care how people think of them….they don’t believe in “old school” virtue like respect, honesty or love….they only believe in power, believe in dominance, believe in fierce competition…..character is anything but to them, so they can never “communicate” with their people….

“Character is our destiny”….I don’t believe in it myself when I was young but now I came to believe it….Whether we are positive or negative persons already determined our fate…so we should devote most of our time to try to cultivate our character, to build on it and to improve it….nothing is important than that….as William James said, “Sow an action and you reap a habit; Sow a habit and you reap a character; Sow a character and you reap a destiny.”

  • Your Personal Branding

Sometimes I’m just thinking about “communication”…what is it?? Is it quantity?? But I saw so many supervisors who like to write memos, tons of memos, but still cannot “communicate” with their people.

Is it information?? No, we’ve already had enough of it, the last thing we want in the world is to have more “information”…

Then what is “communication”…I think it is more than “written memos”, it is more than “instructions”….it’s more than one way of passing or conveying information…

People listen to you not because of what you “write” or what you “instruct”, but because of what you “do” and what you “believe”…..it’s your authentic self….people listen to you because they think you are worth listening to…because they think you are reliable, predictable and consistent….you don’t say one thing but do another…

So at the end of the day it’s all about character….what is character?? It’s your habit of doing thing…your character quickly, silently and consistently conveys ample messages to others….people observe you for a long time before they can trust you and listen to you ……so if you want to “communicate”, build your character first…(To be continued)

  • Chagall

I don't know why I like Chagall's paintings so much....it was so weird when you first look at his paintings, sometime violinist, sometimes bride or goat or chicken, it was just so senseless and illogical, like a painting drawn by children...but you would like it when you look more and more of them....the color and the pattern matched together so perfectly and harmoniously, it seems that there was always a story behind the painting, like a wedding party or a peaceful garden...and I really like its purity which I believe possess the imagination, curiosity and playfulness of a child which make them more and more attractive.....Unlike the paintings of Dali which I quite like them when I was still young....but when I grew older and older, I think Dali just wanted to impress rather than express....

  • Knowledge Worker

Social workers are what Peter Drucker defined as “Knowledge Workers”. We do not reply on any external tools or machine in order to “produce”. Our means of production are our professional knowledge, our expertise and our experiences.

The characteristics of knowledge workers are that they are mobile, they are free to leave any organization they don’t buy in, or from where they cannot get the job satisfaction. The most productive knowledge workers are the ones who have creativity, passion and commitment and the best way to motivate knowledge worker is to respect their uniqueness, their autonomy of doing thing, but not the traditional command and control, or stick and carrot.....Knowledge workers worked for you not because you can secure him or her a job, but because they can identify your mission, the reason why they are doing things…..As Drucker said, “Knowledge people are volunteers. And we know what attracts and holds volunteers. The first thing is a clear mission. People need to know what their organization stands for and is trying to accomplish.”
